Campus Safety

GSUXpress Shuttle Schedule

The GovState Police Department provides shuttle bus services for the students, staff, and faculty. The shuttle schedule is reviewed each semester. Please note, the shuttle service may be delayed during inclement weather.

Governors State ranks as one of the safest public university campuses in Illinois. Safety is a big priority here. And it shows.

Visit Campus Safety and Security and compare us to any college or university in the region.

To ensure your safety, the campus is patrolled 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by a team of State of Illinois certified police officers. You’ll see them in their marked cars, on bicycles, and on T3 motion devices. If you find yourself on campus after dark or late at night, a campus police officer can escort you to your car.

Across the campus, you’ll find emergency phones – either red or yellow – that automatically call the campus police department 24 hours a day. All you have to do is pick up the receiver.

GovState also maintains an Emergency Response Team that reviews emergency preparedness plans and procedures, and implements new procedures to ensure a safe and secure campus.

In the case of emergencies such as severe weather, an automated system calls students, faculty, and staff – both campus phones and cell phones – as well as text messages.

Campus Safety Alert

The Department of Public Safety is asking the Jaguar community to be aware of safety at all times as a number of vehicle break-ins has been reported recently.

If your vehicle has been impacted or you suspect a break-in has occurred, here are the steps you should take:

Ensure Your Safety: First and foremost, make sure you are safe. If you see anyone suspicious around your vehicle, do not confront them.

Check for Damage: Inspect your vehicle for any signs of forced entry or damage. Look for broken windows, locks, or other alterations.

Report to Authorities: Contact local law enforcement to report the break-in. Provide them with all relevant details, including your vehicle’s make, model, and any belongings that were stolen.

Document the Incident: Take photos of the damage and any items that were stolen, if applicable. This documentation can be helpful for both the police report and insurance claims.

Notify Your Insurance Company: If you have comprehensive or collision coverage, report the incident to your insurance provider. They can guide you on the next steps.

Secure Your Vehicle: If possible, secure your vehicle to prevent further incidents. You may need to replace locks or windows, or consider additional security measures such as an alarm system.

Monitor for Identity Theft: If personal items were stolen (like a wallet or documents), keep an eye out for potential identity theft.

Please contact the Department of Public Safety at 708.534.4900 with questions and/or concerns.

Jeanne Clery Safety Act

October 1, 2026 Edition — Reporting Years 2023, 2024, and 2025

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) is a federal law that requires colleges and universities participating in federal student financial aid programs to disclose information about campus security policies, crime, and certain incidents occurring on or near campus.

Originally enacted in 1990 as the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, the law was later amended and renamed the Jeanne Clery Safety Act in 1998. The amendments expanded institutional reporting requirements, including requirements concerning crimes motivated by bias.

The Clery Act requires institutions to collect, classify, and disclose statistics for specified crimes occurring within Clery Act-defined geographic areas. Institutions must report statistics for the three most recent calendar years and publish.

Clery Act Crime Statistics

Specifically, the Clery Act requires Governors State University to report and tally statistics for the following categories of crimes and offenses, when they meet the applicable Clery Act definitions and geographic requirements:

Primary Clery Act Crimes

  • Murder and Non-Negligent Manslaughter
  • Manslaughter by Negligence
  • Rape
  • Fondling
  • Incest
  • Statutory Rape
  • Robbery
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Burglary
  • Motor Vehicle Theft
  • Arson

Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Offenses

  • Dating Violence
  • Domestic Violence
  • Stalking

Hate Crimes

The University must also report hate crimes involving the Clery Act primary crimes listed above, as well as certain additional offenses when they are motivated in whole or in part by bias. These include:

  • Larceny-Theft
  • Simple Assault
  • Intimidation
  • Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property

For purposes of Clery Act reporting, hate crimes are crimes in which the perpetrator intentionally selects a victim because of the perpetrator's bias against the victim's actual or perceived race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, national origin, or disability.

Arrests and Referrals for Disciplinary Action

The University must also report statistics for:

  • Arrests for Weapons Law Violations
  • Arrests for Drug Abuse Violations
  • Arrests for Liquor Law Violations
  • Referrals for Disciplinary Action for Weapons Law Violations
  • Referrals for Disciplinary Action for Drug Abuse Violations
  • Referrals for Disciplinary Action for Liquor Law Violations

Clery Act statistics are reported according to federal definitions and reporting requirements and may differ from statistics maintained for other law enforcement, administrative, or institutional purposes.

Clery Act Reporting Geography

Crime statistics included in this Annual Security and Fire Safety Report are reported according to the Clery Act's geographic classifications, which generally include:

  1. On-Campus Property
  2. On-Campus Student Housing Facilities, when applicable
  3. Public Property immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus
  4. Noncampus Buildings or Property that meet the Clery Act definition

The University evaluates reported incidents to determine whether they fall within the applicable Clery Act geographic boundaries and whether they meet federal crime classification requirements.

Reporting Years Covered by This Report

This October 1, 2026, Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains required Clery Act crime statistics for the calendar years:

  • 2023
  • 2024
  • 2025

The statistics are compiled from reports received by the Governors State University Department of Public Safety, designated Campus Security Authorities, and other sources required by federal law. The University follows applicable U.S. Department of Education Clery Act requirements when determining which incidents are included in the University's annual crime statistics.

The inclusion of an incident in the Clery Act statistics does not necessarily mean that an individual was arrested, prosecuted, or found responsible for a crime. Likewise, the absence of a crime from the statistics does not necessarily mean that no incident occurred; an incident may fall outside the Clery Act's definitions or geographic reporting requirements.
